The rabbi in this scene is taking two Yeshiva students through their studies. They are studying for their bar mitzvahs and probably terrified that they will never learn their Hebrew portion of the Torah. Since at a bar mitzvah a young boy graduates into manhood, they are also probably wondering why learning the Hebrew will suddenly transform them.
